RAPAPORT... The eighth edition of the Gem & Jewellery India International Exhibition (GJIIE) experienced improved traffic over the weekend, with exhibitors receiving good inquiries from customers during the four-day event which ended on February 26.

''The momentum was there as the visitor traffic was good on Saturday and Sunday,'' said Sandeep Tolia, the head of sales for domestic markets at Hari Krishna Exports. “Overall the show was good for the people in the gold business.”

Tolia added that there were inquiries for loose diamonds as well from local retailers in Chennai but the proportion was less than sales of gold jewelry. He noted that gold jewelry demand was better than for diamond jewelry.

''There was good crowd and inquiries despite the market being a little slow in the past three months,'' said Mahaveer Bothra of Chennai-based White Fire, a diamond jewelry manufacturer.

Around 225 exhibitors from Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi and several other Indian cities as well as from Thailand, Italy, Turkey, Dubai, Hong Kong and China participated in the show this year, up from around 160 in 2011.

“The show was excellent,” said Jayantilal Challani, the president of the Madras Jewellers and Diamond Merchants Association (MJDMA). “We are yet to get the exact details about the visitors but the number was definitely more than 10,000.”

He added that more than 90 percent of exhibitors have already booked for next year’s show.

UBM India and the MJDMA jointly organized the business to business (B2B) jewelry trade show at the Chennai Trade Centre in the southern Indian city of Chennai.
